Bean Sort — Categorisation and Visual Search
Separate the mixed beans completely, as quickly as you can
What this level trains
Bean Sort is a categorisation and visual search game: a pile of beans sits in a bowl, and you move every bean into the empty boxes below until each box holds a single kind and no two boxes share one. In other words, you fully separate the beans, and the set ends the moment they are sorted.
Which kind goes into which box is entirely your choice. Placing first or sorting first both work, and a red-left green-right layout counts the same as the reverse, so every set leaves a little strategy up to you. There is no single correct order, and no penalty for choosing a different mapping.
The ladder turns three dials at once: categories and counts, from 2 kinds and 10 beans up to 6 kinds and 36 beans; stimulus type, switching from solid colours to icons at level 5; and dynamic interference, with rotating icons at levels 7 and 8.
The bean diameter is identical at every level, fixed at 12 percent of the bowl, so difficulty comes only from those three dials. Solid-colour levels also add a texture as a redundant cue, which helps players who have trouble telling red from green apart. That keeps the scoring basis the same across levels.
How to play
- Read the bowlThe server scatters the beans with no overlaps and nothing outside the rim, so every set looks different while sharing exactly the same difficulty.
- Drag a beanDrag a bean into any box. In a small box you can drop it next to an existing bean and it settles into place, so you do not need a large empty area.
- Or tap to moveYou can also tap a bean to pick it up and tap a box to drop it, which is steadier than dragging on a touch screen. Tap empty space in the bowl to put a bean back.
- Adjust and finishA placed bean can be picked up and moved again, and the clock keeps running the whole time. The instant every box holds one kind, the set ends and is graded on total time.
8 difficulty levels and score thresholds
The categories run 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, 6, 6 and 6, with 5, 6, 6, 6, 8, 6, 6 and 6 beans per category, giving totals from 10 up to 36. From level 5 solid beans become icons, and levels 7 and 8 rotate them. The total caps at 36 because, with a fixed bean size, a round bowl only fits about 36 non-overlapping beans.
| Level | Categories × beans each | Full-mark line | Excellent | Good | Pass | Max score | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 2 categories × 5 = 10 beans | 7 s | 10 s | 12 s | 16 s | 3000 | Plain colour beans |
| Level 2 | 3 categories × 6 = 18 beans | 14 s | 20 s | 24 s | 32 s | 4000 | Plain colour beans |
| Level 3 | 4 categories × 6 = 24 beans | 19.9 s | 28.5 s | 34.2 s | 45.6 s | 5000 | Plain colour beans |
| Level 4 | 5 categories × 6 = 30 beans | 26.3 s | 37.5 s | 45 s | 1 min | 6000 | Plain colour beans |
| Level 5 | 4 categories × 8 = 32 beans | 30.8 s | 44 s | 52.8 s | 1 min 10 s | 7000 | Icon beans |
| Level 6 | 6 categories × 6 = 36 beans | 37.8 s | 54 s | 1 min 5 s | 1 min 26 s | 8000 | Icon beans |
| Level 7 | 6 categories × 6 = 36 beans | 42.5 s | 1 min 1 s | 1 min 13 s | 1 min 37 s | 9000 | Icon beans · Spins one turn every 18s |
| Level 8 | 6 categories × 6 = 36 beans | 45.7 s | 1 min 5 s | 1 min 18 s | 1 min 44 s | 10000 | Icon beans · Spins one turn every 9s · Spin direction is random |
You can only reach the maximum score at or under the full-mark line. Past the pass line the score keeps decaying, down to 0 at twice the pass line. The maximum rises from 3000 to 10000 across the levels.
Tips and common mistakes
- Fix the mapping firstScan the bowl and count the kinds, then decide which kind goes in which box. Once the mapping is set you will not hesitate or rework halfway through.
- Work kind by kindPicking one kind at a time beats sorting by whatever is nearest, because it avoids re-identifying and switching categories on every single bean.
- Read silhouettes when icons spinAt levels 7 and 8, do not wait for an icon to rotate upright. Judge the outline and main colour first, then confirm the shape before you drag.
- Prefer tapping at low levelsDragging means holding and moving, while tapping is two clean clicks: pick the bean, pick the box. That rhythm is steadier when the counts are small.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I have to plan the sorting first?
- No. Bean Sort never presets which box takes which kind, so you only need every box to end up pure. Reversing the kinds between two boxes is scored the same, which keeps the rule simple and fair, and the score reflects how you organise the work rather than which mapping you picked.
- Are the beans placed randomly, and can they repeat?
- Positions and kinds are generated server-side from the set token: beans never overlap or leave the rim, each kind has an equal number, and two neighbouring beans are never the same kind. So the difficulty basis is identical every time and the layout cannot be rerolled for an easy set.
- Why do the icons rotate at levels 7 and 8?
- Rotation does not change an icon identity, it only makes it slower to recognise. It is the last notch of the dynamic-interference dial and separates players better than simply adding more beans, without cramming the bowl.
- What if I sort something wrongly halfway through?
- Just fix it: tap the bean in the box and move it to another one. The timer never pauses, so getting it right the first time saves you a rework and a slower total, and planning the mapping well ahead avoids most reworks in the first place.
- Why is there no reset button?
- If resetting restarted the clock, practising a set before an official run would become profitable. Bean Sort has little strategic depth anyway, so a single timing rule keeps the comparison fair across players.
